Drill 1: Bounce Pass, Half-Turn, and Low Driven Ping

Drill 1: Bounce Pass, Half-Turn, and Low Driven Ping
Objective
Develop a midfielder’s ability to scan the field, receive on the half-turn, communicate effectively, and distribute the ball quickly and accurately under pressure.
Equipment
2 players
1 soccer ball
2–4 cones (optional)
A playing area approximately 5–10 meters apart
Setup
Position two players facing each other about 5–10 meters apart. If using cones, assign each cone a different color or direction. If cones are unavailable, simply use imaginary target areas.
How the Drill Works
Step 1 – Bounce Pass
The drill begins with Player A making a firm ground pass to Player B. Player B immediately returns the ball with a one-touch bounce pass.
Step 2 – Receive on the Half-Turn
As the ball travels back, Player A checks their shoulder, opens their body, and receives the pass on the half-turn, preparing to play forward with minimal touches.
Step 3 – Decision Making
Just before or as Player A receives the ball, Player B calls out a predetermined color (for example, “Blue,” “Red,” or “Yellow”). Each color represents a specific passing direction or target.
Step 4 – Low Driven Ping Pass
Player A reacts immediately by playing a firm, low driven pass toward the designated target before resetting to begin the next repetition.
Continue the drill at a high tempo, alternating roles after a set number of repetitions.
Coaching Points
- Scan over your shoulder before receiving the ball.
- Receive with an open body shape to allow forward play.
- Use your first touch to prepare the next action.
- Play crisp, accurate passes along the ground.
- Communicate clearly and consistently throughout the drill.
- React quickly to the color call to simulate real match decision-making.
- Focus on quality before increasing speed.
Progressions
To increase the difficulty, consider introducing one or more of the following:
- Reduce the distance between players to speed up decision-making.
- Limit players to two touches.
- Introduce a passive defender to create light pressure.
- Increase the number of color options to challenge scanning and reaction speed.
- Add movement before receiving, requiring players to check away and then return to the ball.
Coach’s Corner
Great midfielders rarely receive the ball standing still—they constantly scan, adjust their body position, and make quick decisions before the ball arrives.
This drill develops the habits seen in elite midfielders: awareness, communication, quality first touch, and accurate distribution under pressure. Encourage players to think one pass ahead, play with confidence, and maintain a high tempo throughout every repetition.
